Time Tracking options available in STT - Comparison chart

We offer a few different options to track time as part of our Scheduling and Time Tracking (STT) solution. These options work for salaried and hourly employees.

Pros

Cons

Hardware clocks

Physical devices placed in heavy traffic areas for employees to punch in and out

  • Employees who work on-site
  • Employees without smartphones
  • Locations with spotty internet connection
  • Extremely low-trust environments where time theft is a concern
  • Bigger budgets as there's a higher cost to acquire the devices

  • The only option with biometric (fingerprint, face) identity verification
  • When disconnected, clocks can store data locally and sync to the cloud later

  • Connection to internet through landline (Wi-Fi is possible but not recommended)
  • Physical devices are purchased or leased, and then mailed to you after configuration
  • Troubleshooting is limited and challenging as it's third-party hardware
  • Hardware clocks can fail and miss punches due to memory storage and other issues. Typically solved by a hard reset, which requires setting up the device and employees again from scratch
  • Breaks are not captured, just a shift's start and end times
  • Employees cannot drop or swap shifts

Terminal punch

A tablet placed in kiosk mode for employees to punch in and out with login credentials

  • Employees who work on-site
  • Employees without smartphones
  • Jobs where biometric identity verification is not a requirement
  • Low-trust environments
  • Medium budgets

  • Ability to punch into specific shifts or unscheduled shifts
  • Ability to punch into departments other than employee’s primary
  • Less expensive than hardware clocks
  • Works on both Android and iOS devices
  • IP fencing is enabled by default for better security

  • Stable internet connection is needed at all times
  • Device needs to be purchased by client
  • Breaks are not captured, just a shift's start and end times
  • Employees cannot drop or swap shifts

Employees punch through the Rise app installed on their work or personal phone

  • Employees who work on-site or from anywhere
  • Jobs where biometric identity verification is not a requirement
  • Relatively high-trust environments
  • Small budgets

  • Allows for geofencing or IP fencing
  • Ability to punch into specific shifts or unscheduled shifts
  • Employees can drop and swap shifts

  • Breaks are not captured, just a shift's start and end times

Web punch

Employees punch through the Rise platform using their Rise credentials

  • Office workers, in-person or remote/hybrid
  • Jobs where biometric identity verification is not a requirement

  • Allows for IP fencing
  • Ability to punch into specific shifts or unscheduled shifts
  • Employees can drop and swap shifts

  • Breaks are not captured, just a shift's start and end times

Timesheets

Employees track time through the Rise platform using their Rise credentials

  • Office workers, in-person or remote/hybrid
  • Jobs where biometric identity verification is not a requirement

  • Allows for IP fencing
  • Time can be entered as total hours, with start and end times
  • Employees can drop and swap shifts

  • Breaks can be captured

CSV import

Time tracked elsewhere can be uploaded to Rise by admins/account owners

  • Employees who use an alternative system for tracking time
  • Employees who cannot use any of the other methods described
  • Organizations that need to import time entries in bulk

  • Users (admins/owners) securely log in to Rise
  • Data is validated on import

  • Only available to users with administrative privileges
  • Doesn’t take full advantage of scheduling features
