Create a goal

Create a goal

One of the key responsibilities of a manager is to bring out the best in the employees they work with, and goal setting is an ideal way to do that. By creating goals for your employees, you can help them build successful habits while fostering a culture of personal and professional growth within your organization. Employees can also create goals for themselves to keep track of their objectives and showcase their work.

1. Navigate to Performance, then click Goals.

2. Click + Create a goal.

3. Give your new goal a name and description. While optional, goal descriptions are a great place to explain the motivation behind a goal and remind employees why it’s important.

4. Select from the dropdown which kind of goal you want to create. Goals can be Individual, Departmental, Team or Organizational.

If you select Departmental, choose which department you want the goal to apply to.
Note that these categories don’t impact who can see or update the goal; they’re just used for filtering and organizing.

5. Choose an owner for the goal. The owner is responsible for the goal and will be asked to give updates and make sure the goal is achieved, regardless of whether the goal is Individual, Departmental, Team or Organizational.

6. Select the goal’s visibility level. Public goals are visible to everyone in your organization, while Private goals are visible only to the goal owner, their manager(s), and admins.

We encourage you to make goals public whenever possible. Transparency in goal setting helps keep employees motivated and helps them understand how their work fits into your organization’s larger objectives.

7. Choose a Due date for the goal. This can be adjusted later if the goal’s timeline changes. For instructions on how to do so, check out our article on How to make changes to an existing goal.

8. The Metric is how progress is tracked for the goal. Users will be prompted to update this value each time they post a progress update for the goal.

There are 4 options for goal metrics:
  1. Percent (%): Measures the percentage of a goal towards completion. Note that you’re not limited to Start and Target values of 0% and 100%—you can use any positive or negative numbers in these fields.
  2. Number (#): Can be used to count individual steps towards completing a goal. Like with Percent, the Start and Target values can be any positive or negative number.
  3. Currency ($): Similar to Number, but used for recording specific dollar amounts. Useful for recording sales or savings.
  4. No metric: Used for goals with no incremental steps; for example, whether a sales prospect has closed or not.
9. Click Create.

Your new goal is now active and can be viewed on the Goals page. Check out our article on Understanding the Goals page for more on viewing existing goals.
