Update a goal's progress

Update a goal's progress

Just as important as setting goals is updating your progress along the way. Progress updates help keep your goals front-of-mind while giving you a way to showcase your performance or ask for help if progress is blocked.

To update a goal’s progress:

1. Navigate to Performance, then click Goals.

2. Find the goal you want to update and click on it to open it.

For instructions on how to navigate the Goals page, check out our article on Understanding the Goals page.

Posting a progress update

If the goal isn’t completed yet, you can post an update to log your progress towards completing it. There’s no limit to the number of times you can update a goal, so we recommend updating every time you have something new to report on.

You can post a progress update for a goal if you’re the owner, the owner’s manager, or an admin.

1. Click Update progress.

2. Select a Status for the goal.

The options for statuses are:
  1. On track: The goal is on track to be completed by the due date.
  2. Behind: The goal is behind schedule, but it’s still possible to complete it by the due date.
  3. At risk: The goal is behind schedule and unlikely to be completed by the due date.
  4. Blocked: The goal is behind schedule, but for reasons outside of your control (for example, a team member hasn’t delivered on their responsibilities).
3. Update the value in the Metric field, and add a comment explaining your changes.
When you’re done, click Post.

If you’re part of a check-in cycle, you can also post progress updates as part of your check-in. Check out our article on How to write a check-in for more details.

Closing a goal

When a goal no longer needs status updates, you should close it. When a goal is closed, it won’t show up as an Active goal on the Goals page and you won’t be able to post further progress updates unless it’s reopened.

Goals can be reopened, but you should try to only close a goal if you’re certain you won’t be making any more progress on it.

1. Click Close goal.

2. Select a Status for the goal.

The options for statuses are:
  1. Completed: Goal was achieved.
  2. Missed: Goal wasn’t achieved.
  3. Cancelled: Goal no longer needs to be completed.
3. Add a comment to wrap up the goal, and click Close.

Reopening a closed goal

If you accidentally close a goal or want to give a tough objective another try, you can reopen closed goals. If you want to change anything about the goal before reopening it, you can edit it while it’s closed.

1. Click the three dots in the upper right corner of the screen, then click Reopen.

The goal will be reopened, and you’ll be able to update the goal’s progress or close it again.
